Poverty is a major problem in the U.S. That is a fact that many
of us choose to ignore. Over 35 million people live in poverty in
the United States and over 45 million people don't have health
insurance; I learned this by reading this book! While we often
rationalize that the poorest person in the U.S. is richer than most
others in third world countries, how many of us would be willing to
trade places?
These are the types of issues that author Ronald Sider brings up in his
book Just Generosity. Plus so much more. Sider calls
Christians to awaken their social conscience and work to put an end to
poverty in our wealthy nation. While he calls for government
reforms, he also puts the responsibility on businesses to pay a living
wage and people of faith to do what they can to bring justice to the
poor.
Sider does much more than just lament about the terrible conditions
of those in poverty; he shares a plan on how we can make a difference.
This book is well-researched, yet is written in everyday language
that is not only enlightening, but interesting and easy to read. I
have ordered several copies to give to government and business leaders
that I feel can have an impact on the issue of poverty in our country.
After reading it yourself, I have no doubt that many of you will do the
same.
